Industrial CT services

ZEISS industrial computed tomography (CT) dimensional inspection.

Precise, non-destructive inspection of your parts Time-to-market for new components keeps shrinking across every industrial sector, and manufacturers face mounting pressure. Even so, schedule pressure and rising component complexity must not compromise quality control during product development. In particular, inspecting internal structures has always been difficult, because until recently destructive testing was often required to obtain accurate measurements. That changes with industrial computed tomography (CT) in metrology. With this technology, parts can be inspected completely and non-destructively before they are analyzed and corrected. Industrial CT is what you need to perform accurate analyses and measurements of your components. Can your company not perform CT inspection today? The X-ray technology of the ZEISS METROTOM 800 in our CT services lab reveals—non-destructively—what would otherwise remain hidden. Applications for CT and X-ray systems Automotive, aerospace, medical technology, electronics… each sector has its own manufacturing processes and different kinds of potential defects that are often invisible from the outside. X-ray inspection opens a new range of applications: from internal defect inspection and measuring internal structures to structural material analysis. Application examples in industrial CT metrology Every industry has its own processes; potential failures inside components vary accordingly and are not always visible externally, yet they can have major consequences. X-ray application and CT-based measurements reduce uncertainty and visualize internal structures in 2D and 3D—without destroying the part. Because manufacturing processes and components vary widely, industrial CT metrology spans many use cases—from failure analysis and assembly verification to dimensional metrology of internal structures. Gain new insight into your parts using CT and X-ray, and discover measurement services suited to your daily work.

What can ZEISS METROTOM reveal?

Distortion All individual parts are finished, but they no longer fit because they are deformed. With METROTOM you can verify internal and external structures during production and intervene early in the manufacturing process. Shrinkage cavities The vacuum created during cooling can significantly reduce component quality. If these voids are not detected in time, they can lead to fractures under certain conditions. Residues Residues such as sand from casting molds or metallic powder from 3D printing can be detected quickly and easily in a single scan. Porosity If casting temperature is not optimal, porosity can form. Depending on size, location, and number of air pockets, the defect leads to loss of strength and functional degradation. Inclusions Inclusions of slag, oxide, sand, or tungsten can cause problems in downstream processing or lead to cracks. Cracks What starts as a small crack can become a big problem. Cracks in the material have a major impact on component stability—especially for safety-critical parts. With a single scan, ZEISS METROTOM 800 can reveal even cracks invisible to the naked eye. In addition, the measurement process is automated and traceable, with scan parameters selected to ensure consistent results and high throughput with multi-part scanning.

Metrology

• Comparison of actual and nominal values Deviations from the CAD model or master part are shown using false-colour comparison. • Dimensional control Industrial CT lets you verify dimensional accuracy of complex internal and external features in a single scan. • Wall thickness analysis Wall thickness of internal structures is shown using colour coding. • Tooling and process optimisation A full part inspection provides actionable insight into tool wear and the production process. • Reverse engineering and development Create CAD models from 3D volume data to speed up product development and reverse engineering.

Inspection

You can easily and quickly detect voids, porosity, cracks, and other defects. • Assembly verification The assembly of parts is examined to verify function and fit. • Joining technology inspection In a single sweep you can verify whether joints made by welding, adhesives, or rivets are free of defects. • Electronic component inspection Defects in electronic components such as printed circuit boards or batteries are quickly visible with X-rays.

Analysis

Describing a 3D structure provides important data thanks to high-resolution X-ray microscopy. • In situ and 4D analysis In situ and 4D analyses let you study material behavior under external influences and over time. • Roughness analysis You can analyze surface roughness on both internal and external structures. • Fiber composite analysis Fiber composite analysis shows the 3D distribution and orientation of different elements within a composite material. • Grain size and distribution analysis Grain size and distribution are decisive factors for hardness and strength—making analysis essential.
